SURVIVING A SUMMER HOME REMODEL

WITH THE WARM WEATHER OF SUMMER COMES THE GRAND IDEA OF RENOVATING YOUR HOME. THE NICE WEATHER AND INCREASED AMOUNT OF DAYLIGHT MAKE IT THE PERFECT TIME TO START THAT PROJECT YOU’VE ALWAYS WANTED – A NEW KITCHEN OR BATHROOM!

THERE ARE MANY THINGS YOU MAY NOT CONSIDER WHEN PLANNING A REMODEL, SO WE’VE COME UP WITH SOME HELPFUL TIPS TO HELP YOU KEEP COOL DURING THE REMODEL.

PREP ADJACENT ROOMS

WHEN REMODELING ONE ROOM IN YOUR HOME, THERE’S NO DOUBT IT’S GOING TO AFFECT ROOMS SURROUNDING IT, AS WELL. IF THERE WILL BE DEMOLITION OR DRILLING, THE VIBRATIONS FROM THE WORK BEING DONE CAN WORK TO DISLODGE AND DAMAGE ITEMS IN NEARBY ROOMS.

WE RECOMMEND REMOVING ALL FRAGILE AND IRREPLACEABLE ITEMS FROM SURROUNDING ROOMS AND AREAS TO AVOID ACCIDENTAL DAMAGE.

CREATE SEPARATE ENTRYWAYS

DEPENDING ON THE SIZE OF THE REMODEL BEING DONE, THERE COULD BE SEVERAL CONTRACTORS COMING IN AND OUT OF YOUR HOME AT ANY GIVEN TIME.

IT’S A GREAT IDEA TO HAVE ONE ENTRYWAY FOR YOUR FAMILY AND ANOTHER FOR THE WORKERS THAT IS CLEAR OF HOUSEHOLD ITEMS, EQUIPMENT, AND OTHER HAZARDS.

DOING THIS WILL HELP DECREASE INTERRUPTIONS AND DELAYS.

PLAN FOR A MAKESHIFT SPACE

IF YOU’RE PLANNING TO HAVE MK CONSTRUCTION & BUILDERS REMODEL YOUR KITCHEN OR BATHROOM, WE RECOMMEND YOU PLAN FOR A TEMPORARY SPACE IN YOUR HOME TO REPLACE THE ROOM BEING REDONE.

IF IT’S YOUR KITCHEN BEING REMODELED, TRY AND FIND A CONVENIENT SPACE TO SET UP COOKING EQUIPMENT AND STORAGE FOR PREP ITEMS.

IF YOUR BATHROOM IS BEING REMODELED, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE PLANS TO WORK AROUND NOT HAVING ACCESS TO THAT SHOWER AND TOILET.

MINIMIZE EXPOSURE TO DUST

DUST WILL SPREAD THROUGHOUT YOUR HOME DURING A REMODEL. THE CONTRACTOR WILL WORK TO CONTAIN THE DUST WITHIN THEIR WORK AREA, HOWEVER, IT FINDS ITS WAY THROUGHOUT THE HOME.

THE BEST WAY TO COMBAT THIS ISSUE IS TO ENSURE ALL INTERIOR DOORS REMAIN CLOSED, SEALING OPEN DOORWAYS WITH PLASTIC SHEETING, USE PLASTIC SHEETING ON THE CARPET AND STAIRS, AND REPLACE YOUR HVAC FILTER DURING AND AFTER THE RENOVATION.

GET OUT OF THE HOUSE

IF THE REMODEL IS EXTENSIVE, IT MAY BE BEST FOR YOU TO LEAVE THE HOUSE DURING THE PROJECT. IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO LEAVE THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRETY OF THE PROJECT, WE RECOMMEND FINDING APPROPRIATE TIMES TO TAKE YOUR FAMILY OUTSIDE OF THE HOME FOR HOURS AT A TIME.

READY TO REMODEL?

IF YOU’RE READY TO INVEST IN A NEW KITCHEN, BATHROOM, OR AN ADDITION TO YOUR HOME, CONTACT MK CONSTRUCTION & BUILDERS TODAY. WE WILL DESIGN AND BUILD A SPACE TAILORED TO YOUR NEEDS WITH FEATURES THAT ENHANCE THE WAY YOU LIVE.

JUNE IS NATIONAL SAFETY MONTH

THE NATIONAL SAFETY COUNCIL (NSC) INTRODUCED NATIONAL SAFETY MONTH BACK IN 1996 TO PROMOTE SAFE BEHAVIORS TO HELP PREVENT INJURIES AND DEATHS AT WORK, ON THE ROADS, AND AT HOME.

BOTH FATAL WORK INJURIES AND ROADWAY DEATHS ARE ON THE RISE, WHICH MEANS PROMOTING SAFETY IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER. ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT TIPS THE NSC HIGHLIGHTS IS THAT SAFETY IS A 24/7 SUBJECT. WE SHOULDN’T STOP PRACTICING SAFE BEHAVIORS ONCE THE CLOCK STRIKES 5 PM.

EVERY YEAR, THE NATIONAL SAFETY COUNCIL PROMOTES FOUR TOPICS THROUGHOUT THE MONTH OF JUNE. HERE ARE THE SAFETY TIPS FOR 2021.

PREVENT INCIDENTS BEFORE THEY OCCUR

IN ORDER TO CREATE A SAFE WORKPLACE, IT’S IMPORTANT TO IDENTIFY RISKS AND TAKE PROACTIVE SAFETY MEASURES TO REDUCE HAZARD EXPOSURE ON IMPORTANT TOPICS FROM ERGONOMICS TO CHEMICAL MANAGEMENT.

ADDRESS ONGOING COVID-19 SAFETY CONCERNS

THE PANDEMIC IS STILL PRESENT IN OUR EVERYDAY LIVES. AS IT CONTINUES, EMPLOYERS HAVE AN IMPORTANT TASK AHEAD OF THEM, EXPANDING OPERATIONS AND RETURNING REMOTE WORKERS TO PHYSICAL WORKSPACES, BUILDING TRUST AROUND VACCINES, SUPPORTING MENTAL HEALTH, AND SO MUCH MORE.

FEELING SAFE ON THE JOB

PHYSICAL SAFETY IS PARAMOUNT, HOWEVER, THE IMPORTANCE OF PSYCHOLOGICAL SAFETY IS BECOMING MORE CRITICAL. EVERY PERSON SHOULD FEEL SAFE WHILE THEY’RE AT WORK AND FEEL WELCOMED INTO AN INCLUSIVE CULTURE.

ADVANCE YOUR SAFETY JOURNEY

SAFETY IS ALL ABOUT CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT. THERE IS ALWAYS SOMETHING MORE YOU CAN BE DOING TO KEEP YOURSELF AND EVERYONE ELSE SAFE. WHETHER AS AN ORGANIZATION OR AN INDIVIDUAL, THE NATIONAL SAFETY COUNCIL CAN HELP PROVIDE GUIDANCE TO CREATING A SAFE ENVIRONMENT.

SAFETY AT MK CONSTRUCTION

AT MK CONSTRUCTION & BUILDERS, WE PRIDE OURSELVES ON OUR ATTENTION TO EVERY DETAIL ON EVERY JOB. BIG OR SMALL, WE TAKE OUR TIME TO PLAN EVERY STEP AND FOLLOW THROUGH ON THE PROJECT IN THE SAFEST MANNER POSSIBLE.

From Economic Uncertainty to Record High Home Sales

The number of homes with “SOLD” signs in their front yard in the city of Chicago and surrounding suburbs started skyrocketing last summer and hasn’t cooled off since.

Chicagoland home prices are on the rise, as well. But, that isn’t preventing homes from being sold so quickly in such a competitive market. With the combination of a low supply of homes available and low mortgage rates, the trend of strong buyer activity is expected to continue.

If You Build It, They Will Come

With a limited number of homes available on the market in Chicago, new home construction has become very appealing. There’s nothing quite like the brand-new look and freshly painted feel of a new home, no matter if it’s a townhouse in River North, a condo in Bucktown, or a luxury single-family home in Evanston.

Recently, MK Construction & Builders purchased a vacant church site in Elmwood Park with plans to turn it into 12 three-bedroom townhouses equipped with an inviting courtyard, ample parking, and picturesque landscaping. The luxury townhouse developments are very popular in Chicagoland areas, in fact, they are now the fastest-growing segment of the single-family housing construction market.

More Affordable Than Ever

Even with the prices of homes increasing at record rates, they’ve become more affordable than ever. That may seem counteractive, but there’s a reason for it.

Along with the historically low interest rates, consumers have spent the pandemic saving more money than ever before. Armed with more money in the bank and easily accessible low mortgage interest rates, homebuyers can afford loftier asking prices.

Welcome Home

Our team at MK Construction & Builders, Inc. specializes in making your home look and feel like an extension of you. If you’re looking for custom home building services, wanting to add new rooms to your home, or thinking of remodeling your bathroom or kitchen, we want to hear about it.

Tips to Spruce Up Your Outdoor Space this Spring

If you’re like most Chicago residents, now that the weather is turning warmer, you couldn’t be more thrilled about spending more time outside. Whether this is your first spring in your new home or you’re simply looking to spruce things up a bit, taking care of your outdoor space gives you a much-needed outdoor oasis.

Perfect your outdoor space with the following tips.

Choose Bold Colors

While you may avoid colorful furniture and decorative accents inside your home, outside is a completely different ball game. Don’t hesitate to choose a bold color for your outdoor furniture, rugs, flowers, etc. The brighter, the better! Adding in some color can help create a more vibrant outdoor space. Consider shades of orange, aqua, or even yellow to make a splash.

Create Some Privacy

If possible, consider adding a bit more privacy to your outdoor space to make it feel like it’s your own. Even if your outdoor space isn’t huge, making it private can make it significantly more usable. Add in some tall greenery or some long, flowy drapes to section off your patio. A little bit of effort goes a long way!

Add Plenty of Seating

This is especially true if you’re planning on hosting a lot this summer. Ensure your outdoor space has plenty of versatile and movable seating options when you are entertaining.

Don’t Forget the Greenery

As summer approaches, don’t forget to spruce up your backyard with some life! Add plants, flowers, and other greenery to breathe a new life into your outdoor space.

How are you planning on elevating your outdoor space this spring and summer?

Tips for Finishing Your Basement

A finished basement can be a highly functional space for you and your family to enjoy. If your current basement is in the process of being remodeled, or if you’re considering a basement remodel in the future, you’ll want to consider all options to ensure the room looks and functions exactly how you want it to. We know this can be an overwhelming process with endless possibilities, which is why our custom home builders in Chicago have provided some helpful insight below.

Utility is Most Important

Functionality should be at the forefront of your basement, as you’ll want to get as much use out of this area as possible. Consider creating separate rooms for laundry, working out, storage, or even a home office. Be sure to build walls in areas that you want additional privacy and make sure that your plumbing is factored in from the beginning stages of your remodel.

Consider an Open Concept

Many basements have an open concept layout. If you want to go this route, be sure to plan out the main television area with another area to situate your furniture. Some basement remodels include the addition of a dining area, so consider whether your family will get use of a dining space downstairs. Always remember to factor in enough space to walk from one area to another to help your space feel even larger.

Factor In Your Home’s Aesthetic

It’s tempting to use old, mismatched furniture or outdated decorations to finish your basement remodel, but putting in the extra effort to make your space beautiful will pay off in the long run. Cutting corners on cheap finishes or leaving your space too plain can take away from the work that was just completed.

Bathroom Remodels in Chicago: 2021 Trends

Now that 2020 is behind us, we’re excited to focus on what we do best: new construction in Chicago. Because most families spend the most time in their kitchen and bathroom, these are two focal points for remodels.

Maybe you’ve been thinking about updating your bathroom design for quite some time, or maybe you have a small bathroom that you’re not sure how to update. Consider some of the following power room trends for 2021.

Back-Lit Mirrors or Medicine Cabinets

Who doesn’t love a little bit of mood lighting in their master bathroom? Create an ambiance by investing in back-lit mirrors or a back-lit medicine cabinet. Not only does this create an inviting space and the illusion of a floating mirror, but it is also a great way to show off the tile in your existing space as well.

Grand Bathtubs

Our Chicago bathroom remodeling process typically includes a bathtub in some way, as they are both functional and beautiful. Plus, the pandemic has resulted in an increased interest in interior design and home remodeling, resulting in an uptick in bathtub installations.

Bathtubs, especially ones with simple silhouettes, will continue to be popular throughout the year.

Quartz Countertops

Your bathroom countertops will undoubtedly be a factor in your bathroom renovation. Quartz is an especially coveted countertop material to use because it is so durable. It is one of the naturally hardest materials and can withstand scratching and staining. Quartz is an ideal material for both your kitchen and bath renovations.

As one of the top bathroom remodeling contractors in the Chicago area, we’re excited about the year and trends ahead! For top-notch customer service on your remodeling project, get in touch with our skilled team at MK Construction & Builders, Inc.

Lessons We’ve Learned in 2020

This year has been one for the books. With so many momentous events and findings this year, our Chicago custom home builders wanted to take a moment to reflect. While everyone has different takeaways from this year, we wanted to share ours as we plan for a busy 2021 ahead.

Supporting Local Means Everything

The community has come together in a way that we didn’t know was possible, and it has been one of our highlights this year! “Supporting local” comes in a variety of forms. For us, it means trusting a small business to take care of a momentous task — building your home! For others in the area, it means stopping by for a burrito instead of cooking at home or getting your haircut a bit more often than normal.

This dedication and effort don’t go unnoticed, and we are so thankful to be in such a supportive community.

Your Own Space is Extremely Important

Many people are re-evaluating their priorities this year, and having a safe space to call your own is more important now than ever. If you’re not satisfied with your space, don’t hesitate to call us to make a change in 2021.

Make Changes as You See Fit

Speaking of feeling unhappy in your own space, this year has pushed many homeowners to make upgrades or changes that they may not have expected. Maybe that master bedroom could use a revamp or you need to redo your basement to have a space to unwind; regardless, it’s okay to make changes to make your space both functional and beautiful.

We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of you for supporting us for another year. Wishing you a happy holiday season from all of us at MK Construction & Builders, Inc.!

How COVID-19 Has Impacted the Real Estate Market

Like many other industries throughout the world, COVID-19 has undoubtedly taken its toll on the real estate market. Many Americans who were considering selling their homes 8 months ago are now reconsidering as the future of the virus is unknown.

Currently, there aren’t a ton of homes on the market, meaning that sellers have the advantage when it comes to asking for a particular price. Homes are selling fast because inventory is so low.

Record-Low Interest Rates

As a result of an economic downswing, the Federal Reserve has drastically cut interest rates to breaking lows. Now, the average rate on a 30-year fixed mortgage is below 3 percent. Even a quarter or half percentage can make a huge difference in how much families pay for their home.

For example, if you purchase a home that is $200,000 and your interest rate is 6%, you would pay $1,199 monthly. With the market’s current rate, your monthly payment would be $832 each month, saving a total of $131,990 in interest over a 30-year period.

Kitchen Remodeling Trends We’re Loving

Despite a crazy and challenging year for all, we are sticking to the one thing we know best: luxury homes. At MK Construction, we can handle everything from your kitchen remodel to building you a completely custom home.

If you’ve been considering a kitchen remodel in the upcoming months, here are some of the trends we are seeing a lot of:

All Black

Black kitchens are quickly becoming the new version of white kitchens, as we are seeing a surge in black countertops, finishes and even appliances. Black is an extremely strong color choice in your kitchen but it can pay off.

Glass

Another emerging trend that we continue to implement into our designs in glass. Different types of glass, whether it be colored, clear or frosted, are implemented into both furniture and design elements. In kitchens, glass looks beautiful as part of prominent cabinets.

Eco-Friendly Kitchens

More and more brands are implementing eco-friendly designs and practices into their business, and home remodels are no exception. Smart appliances can help save energy and lower environmental impact.

Handmade Materials

Perfect, cookie-cutter kitchens are becoming a thing of the past as tactile surfaces begin to emerge in popularity. This is beginning to lead to kitchens that are designed with all senses in mind, including touch. Unique, authentic slabs that feature imperfections are actually more sought-after than you’d expect.

The Importance of Curb Appeal

The first impression of your home is extremely important to potential buyers. After all, the majority of real estate purchases begin by buyers looking up properties online, so your property can begin attracting eyes through its listing pictures. Having a strong curb appeal helps create a positive association with your home from the get-go, and our custom home builders in Chicago can help your home reach its fullest potential. Here are some simple tips to strengthen your home’s curb appeal.

Add Greenery

A little bit of exterior greenery goes a long way! If you haven’t taken the time to plant some shrubs and other plants around the exterior of your home, make sure you do this before you list your property. Flowers are also a great touch if you want to elevate the look of your home.

Make the Numbers Clear

Something as simple as having clear numbers on the outside of your home makes it pop that much more. If the numbers on your address are old or simply aren’t visible, run to a local hardware store for a fast, inexpensive upgrade.

Upgrade Your Mailbox

You likely don’t put much thought into your mailbox, but sprucing it up is a great way to show that you don’t overlook the small details. Mailboxes range anywhere from $20-$100 and will help pull together the exterior of your home.

Our custom home builders in Chicago know what it takes for a property to come together, and curb appeal plays a big part in this! If you’re interested in learning more about what we can do for you, please get in touch with our team today.

Tips for First-Time Home Buyers

Buying your first home is equal parts exciting and nerve-wracking. If you’ve never purchased your own home before, our custom home builders in Chicago want to help make your experience as smooth as possible. Here are a few tips that we’ve compiled to make your home-buying process a success.

Don’t Settle

One thing that many first-time buyers do is rush into the buying process. This means they haven’t sat down and considered all of the non-negotiables that are on their lists to ensure that they’re happy and content for years (or a lifetime) to come. If you’ve always wanted a waterfall island or you’ve dreamed of having a double-vanity master bathroom, don’t settle for a home that doesn’t offer these details. Our team can help you build your dream home from the ground-up, ensuring that you have everything you’ve always dreamed of.

Choose the Right Neighborhood

There are tons of incredible neighborhoods in the Chicago area and its suburbs, but that doesn’t mean every one is the right fit for what you need. Make sure you do your research and consider the location of your future home carefully. This is especially important if you are new to the Chicago area and may not have previous knowledge of different areas of the city.

Set a Budget

Of course, setting a budget is one of the most important parts of finding the right home for you. Have a good idea of what types of homes you are able to afford within your certain budget before you become too attached to a particular property.

If you’ve had a difficult time finding your dream house, why not leave the task to our team? At MK Construction & Builders, Inc., we provide high-quality new construction homes in Chicago and its surrounding suburbs. Contact us today if you’re interested in learning more!

The Best-Selling Neighborhoods in Chicago

Whether you’re a Chicago native or you’ve recently moved to the Windy City, the options are endless when it comes to finding the ideal neighborhood. Over the past decade, certain neighborhoods have emerged and remained popular in the Chicagoland area, and for good reason. Whether you’re renting or buying, consider adding these neighborhoods to your list of options if you haven’t already.

River North

Nothing screams Chicago like living in the heart of downtown! There are tons of amazing condos and single-family homes in the River North area, not to mention the fact that you are surrounded by some of the best views, food and entertainment that the city has to offer. River North residents can take advantage of shopping on the Magnificent Mile, dine at some of the city’s finest restaurants and soak in the culture and art that the city offers.

South Loop

Another increasingly popular neighborhood to consider is South Loop. Although it is smaller, it offers the convenience of the Loop without the hefty price tag. An increasing number of working professionals are settling down in the South Loop which offers incredible views of the lake, the river and easy access to the Museum Campus.

Edgewater

Head north of the Loop and you’ll be in Edgewater, with the entirety of its eastern border extending along Lake Michigan. This neighborhood gives off incredible charm while still being hip and desirable. As you move toward the interior portion of Edgewater, you’ll find high-quality single-family homes at a wide variety of prices.

Bucktown

If you’re looking for a neighborhood that always has something cool and fun going on, opt for Bucktown. There are plenty of bars and restaurants serving up local grub in addition to rooftop bars and access to the 606 Trail. Think record shops, art galleries, book stores and cool coffee shops.

Regardless of the neighborhood you end up in, our team at MK Construction & Builders, Inc. will make sure your home is uniquely yours. For more information on custom home building in Chicago, please reach out to us today!

Tips for Growing Your Best Garden

As we continue to adjust to a new normal, it’s important to channel your energy in a positive way. COVID-19 has undoubtedly left us feeling a bit shaken up, but there’s still a lot of positive things going on in the world! As the weather in Chicago finally begins to warm up, it’s time to start planning your outdoor garden for this year! Gardening is known to help reduce stress thanks to its relaxing, calming nature. Plus, you get to spend some much-needed time outside while still following guidelines to stay at home.

Here are some tips from our team at MK Construction on how to get your best and most luscious garden yet.

Location is Key

When determining the best spot to place your garden, it’s extremely important to consider the location. Ideally, the garden will receive at least 6 hours of sunlight on a daily basis in order to yield the best results. Within the garden itself, place the tallest plants on either the north or west side so they don’t shade any of the smaller plants.

Choose the Right Soil

If you’re aiming to grow a vegetable garden, we recommend incorporating a good amount of organic material (composted leaves or ground bark) to create a good mix for the seeds. The texture of the soil shouldn’t be sandy nor compacted, but rather a healthy mix of the two. The natural microorganisms found in the organic material will help feed the plants so they thrive.

Don’t Forget to Water

Vegetable plants typically thrive off of one inch of water per week, including natural rain. If you can, use an automatic timer to relieve yourself of the stress and pressure that watering may put on the plant.

We are looking forward to seeing photos of your luscious gardens that you bring to life in the coming months! What are your favorite gardening tips?

Deep Cleaning Your Home for Spring

With chaos erupting worldwide, now is the perfect chance to slow down and tend to what’s really important in life. Staying at home may seem daunting, but there’s a lot of positivity that can come from it. In order to ensure your home is a safe space for you and your family, consider giving it a deep spring cleaning that it deserves! The official start of spring is March 19th, so spring cleaning your home has never been more timely. Here are some tips from our team at MK Construction & Builders, Inc, providers of new construction in Chicago.

Start with the Bathrooms

Your bathroom has the potential to be a breeding ground for dirt, bacteria and grime. This is a natural place to begin the process. Bathroom and toilet cleaners can go a long way in getting rid of the built-up grime, and now is the perfect time to switch your old shower curtain liner for a new one. Replace your toothbrush and clean out the toothbrush holder while you are doing so. Wipe down all accessible areas of the toilet as well as the sink, faucet handles, etc. Your bathroom(s) will be sparkling clean when you’re done!

Kitchen Cleaning Tips

There are many surfaces in your kitchen that you likely haven’t thought about in quite some time, too. Cabinets and drawers should all be wiped down (this includes the insides of drawers, too!) and don’t forget about wiping down your appliances, too!

Other Areas to Consider

Consider cleaning other high-traffic areas of your home that often get attention, such as:

  • Doors and doorknobs: Make sure that you are wiping down door frames, doors and doorknobs to eliminate any lingering germs that have developed.
  • Garbage cans: Wipe down garbage can holders, handles and other related surfaces, as this is where a lot of bacteria congregate.
  • Faucets: All faucets should be cleaned during this time as well.

You’ll be surprised how great you feel once the cleaning process is over! After a long winter, regardless if your home is a new construction project in Chicago or has long been part of your life, give it the TLC it deserves.

Solar Panels and Going Green in 2020

Sustainability is a huge topic that will continue to grow in popularity over the next decade and beyond. At MK Construction & Builders, Inc., we want to help Chicagoland residents help the environment through cutting-edge technologies, including solar panels. In fact, the state of California requires new houses to feature solar panels in an attempt to utilize Mother Nature as a way to power our homes and our lives, and we expect other states to follow suit. In fact, solar energy accounts for approximately 1.6 percent of the U.S.’ total electricity generation, a number that will only go up.

Solar Energy & Your New Home

Rely on our Chicago home builders to implement solar technology into your new construction build. While this doesn’t need to be the focal point of the project, it’s a simple way to ultimately cut back on energy costs while implementing solar installation best practices into the design of your home. South-facing solar panels typically do the best to capture a maximum amount of sunlight throughout the day. There are also solar roof tiles that can replace traditional roof panels to help capitalize on the sun’s energy.

The Benefits of Solar Energy

Installing solar panels has a wide variety of benefits that you may not have previously considered. It’s a renewable resource that will be at our disposal for at least 5 billion more years. It can reduce your electricity bill, plus, there is a chance that you’ll receive payments for the surplus energy that you export back to the grid! Solar energy can be used for a variety of applications, such as generating electricity, generating heat, and to distill water. They don’t require a lot of maintenance and they only require cleaning a couple of times per year.

Please reach out to our Chicago home builders to learn more about how we can implement solar energy into your new construction project!

A Brief Flooring Guide for Your Home Remodel

The number of flooring options that you have to consider when going through your home remodel is abundant. Every flooring option comes with pros and cons that you need to consider before making your final decision. Below, we have compiled a list of some of the most popular flooring options that we complete during our custom home remodels and renovations.

Hardwood Flooring

Of course, you can’t go wrong with hardwood flooring. It is a timeless, classy flooring option that will immediately increase your home’s value. If you are looking for an inexpensive and low-maintenance flooring option, however, hardwood might not be the best option for you. Common hardwood flooring materials include cherry, walnut, maple, oak, birch and pine. Our team can present you with different options so you can see what best suits your style.

Ceramic Tile

Ceramic tile is a popular option for flooring in kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms and entryways. The process of making ceramic tile consists of combining clay with other materials that are heated and cooled to perfection. It comes in a wide variety of colors and designs and is resistant to a lot of everyday wear and tear.

Loop Pile Carpet

Don’t count out carpet, specifically loop-pile carpet that is ideal for high-traffic areas. This particular type of carpet is ideal for high-traffic areas because of the way in which it is made; the fibers are looped and secured to the backing, making it a durable enough design to withstand areas that are often walked on.

Beyond these flooring options, other examples include cut pile carpet, travertine tile, porcelain tile, engineered hardwood and more. Our team will work with you to ensure you are happy with the style and functionality of your ultimate flooring choice.

Wrapping Up 2019

As 2019 comes to a close, our team at MK Construction & Builders, Inc. wants to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has supported us over the past year. There are tons of moving parts required in order to make each of our renovations a success, and we wouldn’t be able to complete our jobs without the help of everyone on our team. From our project managers, rental managers, builders, operations managers and finance managers, we can genuinely say that 2019 was one of our most rewarding years yet!

Most importantly, we want to thank all of our customers for trusting us with such an important task: building the home in which you make memories for years to come. We take pride in being part of your family’s journey and helping you feel like home, one brick at a time.

We Look Forward to Another Decade

As we reflect on our last 15 years in the industry, we feel honored to be working with and for such amazing people. We couldn’t do this without you, and we are looking forward to not only a great 2020, but a great decade. This upcoming year, we plan to continue to expand into the Chicago suburbs and continue to build sustainably.

Cheers!

French Doors vs. Pocket Doors

If you’re considering a home remodel or custom home build, there are many factors to consider. At the end of the project, you want your home to feel unique and special to your family’s wants and needs, which is why our team at MK Construction & Builders, Inc. is here to help you with every step of the process. If you’re hoping to add some character and charm into your living space, starting with your doors is ideal. Both French doors and pocket doors bring a unique feel to your space, so which option is best for you?

French Doors

French doors consist of doors that have glass panes extending for most of their length, so if you want a door option that allows in plenty of natural light, you won’t be disappointed by French doors. They are an ideal option to allow more sunlight into your home and can be installed between rooms to allow for separation in addition to providing more natural light. Both single and double French doors are the perfect addition to any home remodel. Don’t be afraid to use French doors for your bathroom as well, topping it with frosted glass for privacy.

Pocket Doors

Unlike French doors that swing open, pocket doors rest on sliding tracks and fold into themselves, hiding behind the wall. When you want to close the door, you pull the double doors from their convenient hiding spot in the wall. Because pocket doors are so discreet, they are ideal for small spaces that wouldn’t work with doors that took up more space.

Ultimately, the decision of French doors versus pocket doors is up to you! If you’re interested in exploring other door options, our team is only a phone call away!

3 Kitchen Remodeling Mistakes You Can Avoid

Preparing for the renovation and remodel of your kitchen is an extremely exciting time! Our team at MK Construction & Builders, Inc. has the experience you need to make the process go as smoothly as possible, including warning you about any potential red flags. Throughout our experience, we have seen the following mistakes time and time again. Avoiding them is easy when you have our team by your side.

Emphasizing Form Over Function

Yes, you want the end result of your kitchen to look stunning. But not only should the process of kitchen remodeling focus on aesthetics, but it should also focus on functionality. One useful trick is walking through how you wish you could use your kitchen and making sure that all of those scenarios can come to fruition after the remodel. Leave it in the hands of our team to ensure you end up with an absolutely breathtaking end result as well!

Overlooking the Small Stuff

Kitchen remodels should, of course, revolve around bigger items like the refrigerator and stove, but that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t be mindful of the smaller items as well. For example, don’t skimp on the contractor that you use or don’t overlook how important the right color scheme can be. Smaller details can make a huge difference in the final product.

Hiring the Wrong Team

A home remodel is something that you and your family should be able to enjoy for years to come. Don’t hire a team that you have hesitations about. Our team at MK Construction knows what it takes to achieve beautiful, functional kitchens and homes. We look forward to working with you!

Keeping Bathroom Mold & Mildew at Bay

Having mold anywhere in your home can be a startling sight to see, but there are measures that you can take to keep mold and mildew growth to a minimum. Thanks to Chicago’s humid summers and long winters of barricaded windows, it’s nearly impossible to avoid the development of mold and mildew altogether. The following tips are useful to minimize the effect of mold and mildew in your new, amazing home!

Prevention

Ventilation plays a huge role in keeping mold growth to a minimum. Your bathroom, especially if it has recently been remodeled, should be strategically designed to promote ventilation. This means having the right exhaust fan that stays running for at least 30 minutes after showering. This helps prevent moisture from developing. Make sure to wipe down surfaces in your bathroom that have and water droplets on them after the shower to minimize moisture.

In terms of design, pick a dark wall or tile color that matches with grout and caulk. This doesn’t prevent mold growth but can help make it more discreet.

Management

If you notice your bathroom is starting to become a breeding ground for mold or mildew, don’t panic! Know that there are steps that you can take to break down the mildew or mold. Start by using bleach, hydrogen peroxide or a different cleaning solution of your choice to clean your bathroom surfaces on a weekly basis. In some cases, you also may need to re-caulk your bathroom to refresh it.

If you’re hoping to renovate your bathroom sooner than later, look no further than our team at MK Construction & Builders, Inc.! We look forward to helping you design the bathroom of your dreams!
